Jailer greets BJP MLA arrested for Muzaffarnagar riots with folded hands
LUCKNOW: The jailer of Orai prison in Jalaun district was caught on camera on Sunday with folded hands, greeting BJP MLA Sangeet Singh Som brought to jail after his arrest for allegedly instigating communal passions that triggered the Muzaffarnagar riots in which 48 people were killed. While Som was "welcomed" by jailer LP Singh, other jail staff saluted the MLA on his arrival at Orai prison.
Som, who represents Sarthana constituency, has been remanded in 14 days' judicial custody by a Muzaffarnagar court. The jailer and other staff were at the gate to receive him.
When contacted, IG prison RP Singh told agencies that the matter has come to his notice and it would be looked into. "Som is still an MLA and as a public representative has the right to basic courtesies. But if there is anything beyond that, it will be looked into," he said. Deputy jailer AA Ansari said the MLA would not be given any additional facility.
Som and another BJP MLA Suresh Rana, arrested from Lucknow on Friday, were taken together to Orai jail from where Rana was sent to Banda prison. As soon as the news of Som's arrival spread, scores of BJP workers gathered outside the Orai jail. When Som got out of the police van amid tight security, party workers raised slogans, with many taking pictures from their mobile phones of the MLA entering prison. That was when one of the cameras recorded the jailer's craven welcome of Som.
No more arrests have been made in connection with the Muzaffarnagar riots. The government is likely to book and arrest more leaders for exacerbating communal tension during the clashes in west UP. So far three MLAs have been arrested for alleged provocative speeches that led to the riots. These are BJP MLAs Suresh Rana and Sangeet Singh Som, and BSP MLA Noor Salim Rana.
On Sunday, the police detained several people who had gathered in support of riot victims.
